Buying a Secondhand MacBook? Here's Exactly What to Check First

MacBooks hold their value well, which is exactly why the used market for them is so active — and why it’s worth being thorough before you pay. Apple’s build quality means problems are often hidden well, not absent. Here’s what to actually check before handing over money for a used MacBook.

Check the battery cycle count first

Unlike most Windows laptops, macOS gives you an exact cycle count for the battery, which is one of the best used-MacBook health indicators available. Go to Apple menu → About This Mac → System Report → Power, and look for “Cycle Count.” Apple considers most MacBook batteries rated for around 1,000 cycles before capacity noticeably degrades — a MacBook with 800+ cycles is nearing the end of its battery’s useful life regardless of the laptop’s age.

Beyond cycle count, check actual current capacity against original design capacity. A battery reporting “Service Recommended” in System Report, or holding well under 80% of its original capacity, should factor directly into your offer — MacBook battery replacements typically cost more than PC equivalents due to Apple’s service pricing or the difficulty of third-party repair on unibody designs. Screen: check for dead pixels, uniformity, and True Tone behavior

MacBook Retina and mini-LED displays are excellent when healthy, but used units can develop dead pixels or backlight bleed just like any other laptop. Cycle through solid colors in a dim room using our Dead Pixel Test, and separately check overall screen uniformity for patchiness near the edges with our Screen Test.

If you’re buying a MacBook Pro with a mini-LED display (16-inch models), also check for blooming — a subtle halo effect around bright objects on dark backgrounds — which is a known characteristic of mini-LED technology but can be more pronounced on some units.

Keyboard: check every key, especially on butterfly-era models

If you’re buying a MacBook from 2016-2019 with the butterfly keyboard mechanism, keyboard reliability is the single most important thing to check — these keyboards were prone to key failures from dust ingress, sometimes requiring full top-case replacement. Test every key, including ones you don’t normally use, with our Keyboard Test. Newer MacBooks (2020+) returned to a scissor-switch mechanism that’s far more reliable, but testing every key is still worth the two minutes it takes.

Webcam and microphone

MacBook webcams are simple but can develop issues, particularly a color cast or exposure problems if the laptop has had liquid exposure near the display hinge. Run our Webcam Test to check image quality and confirm the camera activates properly.

Trackpad precision

The Force Touch trackpad on modern MacBooks is a common point of both praise and, when something’s wrong, frustration — check for consistent click registration across the entire trackpad surface, not just the center, and confirm there’s no rattling or looseness.

Ports and connectivity

On USB-C-only MacBooks (2016+), check that all ports charge and transfer data correctly — a single failing Thunderbolt/USB-C port is a common and often overlooked issue, since sellers may have only tested with one cable in one port. Also verify Wi-Fi performance is normal for the model and connection using our Network Speed Test, since a failing Wi-Fi antenna is a somewhat common issue on older units that have been dropped.

Checking for signs of liquid damage or unauthorized repairs

Beyond functional testing, look for:

  • Corrosion or discoloration around the keyboard, especially near the trackpad and speaker grilles
  • Uneven gaps in the chassis, which can indicate a battery swell or a case that’s been opened and improperly reseated
  • Screws that don’t match (Apple uses specific pentalobe screws) — mismatched screws suggest a non-Apple-authorized repair

Common mistakes buyers make with used MacBooks

  • Not checking battery cycle count. This single number tells you more about real battery health than age or visual condition ever will.
  • Assuming “no visible damage” means no liquid exposure. Liquid damage often shows up internally first — corrosion on the logic board — well before any visible external sign.
  • Skipping keyboard tests on butterfly-era models. This is the single most failure-prone component on 2016-2019 MacBooks specifically.
  • Not verifying every USB-C port individually. Testing with just one cable in one port can miss a failing port entirely.
  • Ignoring AppleCare status. Check if any AppleCare+ coverage remains — it’s tied to the serial number and can sometimes transfer or still provide value even second-hand.
